SUMMER SCHOOL WITH JUSTUS LIEBIG UNIVERSITY / SOMERSKOOL MET JUSTUS LIEBIG UNIVERSITEIT

An annual Summer School is hosted by the Project and the Justus Liebig University within the cadre of the TraProBio Project. Students from the NWU (both campuses) and Giessen attend a week summer school on aspects of the protection of biodiversity. Prof LJ Kotzé takes the leadership in this regard.

‘n Jaarlikse Somer Skool word deur die Projek en die Justus Liebig Universiteit binne die kader van die TraProBio projek aangebied. Studente van beide kampusse van die NWU en Giessen woon ‘n weeklange somerskool in Potchefstroom by oor aspekte van biodiversiteit. Prof LJ Kotzé neem die leiding in die verband.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL LAW ASSOCIATION

The Project members are all involved in the Environmental Law Association and the Faculty hosts the Secretariat of the Environmental Law Association. IUCN ACADEMY OF ENVIRONMENTAL LAW

The Faculty is an institutional member of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law http://www.iucnael.org/ Prof Willemien du Plessis served as the co-chair of the Research Committee of the Academy until 2013 and Prof Anel du Plessis is serving on the Governance Committee. Prof Louis Kotze previously served on the Research Committee.

Die Fakulteit is ‘n institusionele lid van die IUCN Academy of Environmental Law http://www.iucnael.org/ Prof Willemien du Plessis was mede-voorsitter van die Navorsingskomitee van die Akadmie tot 2013 en Prof Anel du Plessis dien tans op die Governance Committee. PARTICIPATION IN SOUTH AFRICAN LAW REFORM COMMISSION // DEELNAME AAN DIE WERK VAN DIE SUID-AFRIKAANSE REGSHERVORMINGSKOMMISSIE

Several of the Project’s members were involved in advising the South African Law Reform Commission on the Revision of South Africa’s environmental, mineral, water, local government and land legislation with regard to its constitutionality in 2009. Members are also involved in environmental-law training for government officials, the private sector and NGOs.

Verskeie van die Projek se lede was betrokke by die Suid-Afrikaanse Regshervormingskommissie se Projek om die grondwetlikheid van omgewing, mineraal, water, plaaslike regering en grondwetgewing te ondersoek gedurende 2009.

 

OPLEIDING / TRAINING

Members present lectures in the M Programme Environmental Management in the School of Geo- and Spatial Sciences.

Proff Louis Kotze and Anel du Plessis were invited to attend a Workshop on Human Rights and the Environment in Search of a New Relationship in Spain from 14-15 June 2012.

Proff Louis Kotze en Anel du Plessis was uitgenooi om ‘n werkswinkel in Spanje by te woon vanaf 14-15 Junie 2012. Die werkswinkel se tema was: Human Rights and the Environment in Search of a New Relationship

Proff Louis Kotze and Anel du Plessis were invited to attend a workshop “Climate Change as a Catalyst for Conflict” at The Hague Institute for Global Justice, The Hague. A follow up workshop was held in Potchefstroom in February 2013. Researchers from South Africa, Ethiopia and Uganda attended.

Proff Kotze en Anel du Plessis was uitgenooi om ‘n werkswinkel in Den Haag by te woon oor “Climate Change as a Catalyst for Conflict”. ‘n Daaropvolgende konferensie is in Februarie 2012 in Potchefstroom aangebied. Navorsers van Suid-Afrika, Ethiopië en Uganda het die werkswinkels bygewoon.

Workshops with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung / Werkwinkels met die Konrad Adenauer Stiftung

Since 2010 Prof AA du Plessis with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung has hosted three successful Human Rights Indabas. In 2012 the theme of the Indaba was “The Role of International Law in Understanding and Applying the Socio-economic Rights in South Africa's Bill of Rights”. The Indaba was also attended by approximately 100 people including politicians, government officials, members of the public, students, magistrates and judges. The previous indabas dealt with the role of local government in environmental governance.

Sedert 2010 het Prof AA du Plessis saam met die Konrad Adenauer Stiftung drie suksesvolle Mensereg Indabas gehou. Die 2012 tema van die Indaba was “The Role of International Law in Understanding and Applying the Socio-economic Rights in South Africa's Bill of Rights”. Die Indaba was deur ongeveer 100 mense bygewoon, insluitend politici, regeringsamptenare, lede van die publiek, studente, landdroste en regters. Die vorige indabas het met plaaslike regering en omgewingsbestuur gehandel.

 

AWARDS  // TOEKENNINGS

Prof Anel du Plessis was awarded the 2013 IUCN Academy of Environmental law Junior Scholarship Research Award jointly with Prof Jolene Lin from the University of Hong Kong. http://www.iucnael.org/en/latest-news/96-featured/245-2013-environmental-law-scholarship-awards.html

The Academy consists of “170 universities from 54 countries, with half from developing countries, enabling more than 600 environmental law professors and students to interact and to exchange knowledge, experience and resources.”

She was also awarded the highest category award for teaching at the North-West University.

Prof Anel du Plessis was awarded Post Doctoral Von Humboldt award for research in Germany in 2014.

The NWU is the only institution with two awardees in any of the categories.

Prof Kotze is also a Post Doctoral Von Humboldt holder (2010-2011) and received a return fellowship award for the period in 2012.

Prof Kotze obtained a P-rating from the South African National Research Foundation (NRF) (P rating = potential to develop into a leading international scholar) in 2012

Prof LJ Kotzé was invited as international environmental law advisor to the "Biosphere Ethics Initiative" in Rio, Brazil organised by the Center for Applied Sustainability (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), the IUCN Commission on Environmental Law (Gland, Switzerland) and the Center for Humans and Nature (Chicago, Illinois, VSA). The purpose of the visit was to evaluate legislation and policies of the state Rio in terms of current principles of "bioethics". This work was done in preparation of the UN’s Rio+15 world congress in the same state.

Prof LJ Kotze and Anel du Plessis were selected as members of the Volkswagen Foundation Global Young Faculty in 2010.

Prof Kotze received the Elsevier Young Scientist Award for Contribution to Science in 2012.

Collaboration with Justus Liebig University

In October 2011 a Joint international seminar on Transfrontier Conservation was held at the Justus Liebig University. Several members of the Research Unit participated in the seminar and delivered papers. 

In November 2012 Prof Kotze organised a workshop with the Justus Liebig University a workshop as an outcome of the German-South African Year of Science. The theme of the conference was “The Regulation of Invasive Species – European and South African Perspectives”.

In Oktober 2011 ‘n gesamentlike internasionale seminaar oor Oorgensbewaring was by die Justus Liebig Universiteit gehou. Prof Werner Scholtz organised in cooperation with SAIFAC, the University of Johannesburg and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung a seminar on “The Arab Spring and the African Continent” at Consitutional Hill in Johannesburg during 2012.

Prof W Scholtz and dr Clara Bocchino assisted the Centre for Disaster Management in its project Development of knowledge products for the USAID Disaster Risk Reduction programme (KP 18: Climate Change: Mitigation and Adaptation) in 2011.
