OLIVER FUO is a Professor of Law at the NWU, Faculty of Law since January 2024. His research primarily explores how cities can contribute towards realising the constitutional commitment to social justice in South Africa. It recognises that the success of local authorities to advance this mandate depends on a variety of factors, including the suitability of the applicable legal and policy frameworks, the nature of their interaction with multiple role-players, and their ability to manage environmental and fiscal resources in a sustainable manner. Professor Fuo has published extensively on this theme and has successfully supervised several Masters and PhD students, beyond South Africa. Some of his publications have made original contributions to law.

On 13 March 2023, Professor Fuo was awarded the Georg Forster Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers by the Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation. He will be based at Freie University, Berlin for 18 months in order to execute his Humboldt research project.

He received a Y2 Rating from the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa in 2018. In February 2023, he applied for NRF re-rating.

He has executed work commissioned by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA). He has been approached for work by the Procurement Unit of the German Technical Cooperation (GIZ) and the External Action Unit of the European Union.

As of July 2023, Prof Fuo was appointed by the NWU as the Interim Chairholder of the National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF) SARChI Chair on Cities, Law and Environmental Sustainability.
