6-8 March 2019

As part of a larger Cities-project, the Faculty of Law, NWU and the Freie Universitat, Berlin co-hosted an international multi-disciplinary conference on "Sustainable Development in an Urban Age". The newly established SARCHi CLES Chair was launched during the conference as well as the book launch for "The Globalisation of Urban Governance" edited by Prof HP Aust and Prof AA du Plessis.

18 June 2016

Three of the project participants were involved in the annual ICON-S Conference held in Berlin, Germany.  Proff. Helmut Aust and Anél du Plessis and Dr Cindy Wittke participated in a panel on ‘The Right to the City.’

16-17 August 2016

A Start-up Workshop took place in Potchefstroom on the 16th and 17th of August 2016.

This workshop was a closed event (see programme), but a public lecture formed part of the programme (see programme).

18 August 2016

The participants of the Start-up Workshop met with staff of the City of Johannesburg’s strategic office and visited some of the City of Johannesburg’s project sites (including Robinson Deep Landfill Gas to Energy Project and the Northern Works Biogas to Energy Project (a registered CDM project under the United Nations Kyoto Protocol), which are aimed at promoting sustainability).

The second workshop for the research project took place in Berlin, Germany. South Africa was represented by Prof Francois Venter, Dr Oliver Fuo, Mr Myrone Stoffels, Ms Angela van der Berg, Prof Jaap de Visser (UWC) and co-project leader Prof Anél du Plessis.

13-14 June 2017

Prof Anél du Plessis and Ms Elsabé Roux (Cities-project assistant) attended the Sustainability Week (http://sustainabilityweek.co.za/african-capital-cities-sustainability-forum/), hosted by City of Tshwane, which coincided with the African Capital Cities Sustainability Forum. This event brought together the mayors of various African capital cities, experts on the various themes linked to sustainable cities and other stakeholders. The seminars and workshops focused on sustainability challenges and opportunities in African (especially South African) cities.

12 - 26 March 2018

Alexander Silke, a PhD scholar from the Free University in Berlin, visited the North- West University in order to conduct research for his PHD thesis, which has a focus on South African constitutional law.

01 March -31 May 2018

Professor Oliver Fuo went on a three-month research visit to the Freie Universität, in Berlin.

Angela van der Berg paid a research visit to the Freie University in Berlin in the cadre of the Safe and Sustainable Cities project during May 2018.

26 June 2018

Prof Anél du Plessis presented a paper at a Public Lecture jointly hosted by the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (Potsdam) and the Freie Universität, Berlin on the theme "Domestication of Climate Change Law in South African Local Government Law".

09 – 14 September 2018 

Prof Helmut Aust from the Freie Universität, in Berlin went on a research visit to the North- West University’s Faculty of Law during which time he held a public lecture titled  "From Paris to Pittsburgh and Back? The Changing Role of Cities in the Global Climate Change Regime" on 12 September.
