The Law Clinic form part of the Faculty of Law of the North West University, Potchefstroom Campus. The Law Clinic is involved in a number of projects concerning free legal services, community outreach and capacity building programmes, as well as advisory services. The Law Clinic operates in the provinces of North-West and Mpumalanga where these activity takes place.

The said activities focusses on the following projects:

•  Training: The practical legal training of students in the NWU’s LLB degree.  Short courses for lawyers and paralegals.  Training to members of the communities where the Law Clinic operates.

•  Legal Services: The Law Clinic provides free legal services to people in need in the said provinces.

• Child Justice Unit: The Law Clinic operates a specialist Child Justice Unit and act on behalf of children in various matters in which they are involved, including placement in place of safety, adoptions etc.  The rights of children whom are molested are also dealt with, among other things.

• Advisory Services: The Law Clinic also provides advisory services to members of communities to promote a "rights-based culture” instead of those members taking the law into their hands.

 

The Law Clinic consists of attorneys, candidate attorneys, paralegals and administrative staff involved in the delivery of the above-mentioned services.

The Law Clinic has, at any given time, approximately 1 500 files on hand in which the clinic are acting on behalf of clients. The average number of people assisted annually amounts to approximately 7 000 people.  The number of people in the community and learners that are reached annually through the community outreach programmes amounts to about 5 000 people.

The Law Clinic cooperates with various organisations such as Legal Aid South Africa, state departments, provincial paralegal organisations and other non-governmental organisations, to be successful in reaching our goal.

The Law Clinic, through its activities, wishes improves the quality of life of the people in the North-West and Mpumalanga Provinces.
