North-West University and University of Fort Hare-RAVAC: NWO-NRF Project: Water-Energy-Food communities in South Africa: Full time LLM Bursary for Black female student: 2022
The Netherlands Science Research Foundation (NWO) and the South African National Research Foundation (NRF) awarded funding for a project entitled:
Water-Energy-Food communities in South Africa: multi-actor nexus governance for social justice?
It is a multi-disciplinary project awarded to the University of Utrecht and University of Groningen in the Netherlands and the North-West University (NWU) and the University of Fort Hare (UFH) in South Africa.
This position is available for full-time post-graduate research students (LLM) registered full time at the NWU. The research must fit into the research topic and framework.

Full-time LLM position

One LLM position at the NWU.
Available for 1-2 years, depending on satisfactory progress.

Full-time Post-Doctoral positions

One position at NWU and one at UFH.
Available for 3 years, depending on satisfactory participation and research outputs.

Justice Bess Nkabinde

The North-West University (NWU) honoured Justice Bess Nkabinde with an honorary doctorate on 21 October 2021 for her exceptional contribution to the legal profession and to social justice in South Africa.

She was nominated by the Faculty of Law, with which she maintains close ties, not only for her significant contribution to our country’s jurisprudence but also for being a role model to many, especially women in the legal profession, locally and internationally.

Alumnus Ockert Potgieter passed away

Dr Ockert Potgieter, a former alumnus of the Faculty of Law, passed away this week in Mossel Bay due to Covid-19 related pneumonia. He completed his B Com, LLB and LLD (right to work) degrees at the then Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (now North-West University). He received his B Com and LLB degrees cum laude. He also did a post-graduate diploma in Social Law at the University of Ghent, Belgium in conjunction with Stellenbosch University. He was a brilliant student and always full of life.

He was appointed at the then Rand Afrikaans University (now University of Johannesburg) as a lecturer in labour law. He, however, decided to forsake the law to do missionary work in the Ukraine. He became fluent in Russian. On Wikipedia it is stated: "Ockert Potgieter (born 11 December 1965, died 13 October 2021 ) was a South African missionary in the Ukraine and a film director. His name in Russian is Окерт Потхитер." For more on his interesting life story read Ockert Potgieter - Wikipedia.

Wilemien du Plessis said Ockert was my first doctoral student. He was a brilliant mind and was always full of life. What he decided to do, he did with all his heart. He will be sorely missed. Our condolences to his wife Michelle, children and family.

Background

In Global Jurisprudential Apartheid in the Twenty-First Century: Universalism and Particularism in International Law, the contributors argue that the world is witnessing the formation of a global jurisprudential apartheid despite the promotion of democracy, equality, human rights, and humanitarianism. Examining organisations such as international criminal courts, the World Trade Organisation, the United Nations Security Council, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank, the contributors unpack the challenges of global jurisprudential apartheid. In particular, they analyse the ways in which these organizations hold and contribute to the increasing inequalities between the Global North and the Global South. Link to invitation

The North West University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a postdoctoral fellowship in the Faculty of Law. Applicants interested in pursuing a legal academic career in higher education are strongly encouraged to apply. The fellowship will enable an outstanding doctoral graduate to obtain experience of research, innovation, and community service at a higher education institution under the mentorship of established researchers.

The fellowship is awarded on a competitive basis, taking into account the applicants' academic achievements, research outputs and potentials, as well as the relevance of his/her prior experience and expertise. The fellowship is available for a period of one year, renewable for up to three years. Renewal is subject to satisfactory performance.

South Africa Law Deans' Association (SALDA) Statement on Continuing Gender-Based Violence

We, the Law Deans of the South African Law Deans' Association (SALDA), are deeply distressed by the continued perpetration of gender-based violence, including femicide, in South Africa. The recent and brutal killing of Ms Nosicelo Mtebeni, a law student at the University of Fort Hare, is an urgent reminder that without immediate action, the constitutional rights to gender equality and freedom and security of one's person are meaningless.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Ms Mtebeni's family, friends, the staff and students at the University of Fort Hare.

SALDA calls for all organs of state, including Universities and all sectors of society, to take urgent, proactive measures to create an environment where women can be physically and psychologically secure.

SALDA recognises the role that law faculties play in fostering and realising the ideals and values of our constitution. Socially conscious and proficient legal practitioners strengthen the conditions for the effective administration of criminal justice, and we recognise our role in realising such graduate attributes in our students. Through our legal education, it must be clear that violence against women is unacceptable.

We call on the leadership of all tertiary institutions to take seriously their duty of care to students and their responsibility to create safe environments that nurture a future generation of professionals who will build a more equitable society that respects all people.

Tertiary institutions have unique agency to pioneer new cultures in our communities. At a minimum, this includes the adoption of the following:

Ensuring that institutional policies around gender harm (including sexual harassment and gender violence, physical, emotional, digital etc) are publicised, understood, and enforced
Continuous monitoring, evaluation, and updating of these policies as circumstances change
Creating a bottom-up approach to policy development where women and the marginalised lead the conversation of where the gaps are and what is necessary to build a safer, more inclusive, and more equitable environment
Focusing on transformation so that more women, particularly women of colour, are recruited into the institution and principally into leadership roles
Prioritising course content that focuses on gender harm – not just as a box-ticking exercise but as a tool to have serious conversations that lead to behaviour changes
Using the institution to have public discussions on ways to address gender inequality and gender violence in this country
Recognising and harnessing the power of the law to hold accountable those who transgress

Creating safer and more equitable environments for women on our campuses is an essential step to eradicating the culture of violence against women in our country and across the globe.
