New Frontiers in Global Environmental Constitutionalism
3 Day Conference 12, 13 and 14 April 2016 at the North-West University, Potchefstroom
Welcome
On behalf of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Environmental Rights, Professor John Knox; the Faculty of Law, North-West University South Africa; and Widener University, Delaware Law School, United States, we warmly welcome you to the symposium ‘New Frontiers in Global Environmental Constitutionalism: Implementing Human and Environmental Rights in Global Contexts’. In broad terms, the symposium will examine whether and the extent to which constitutional and other rights-based approaches, including international and regional human rights, promote environmental protection. As part of advancing the work of the United Nations Special Rapporteur, the symposium has two principal objectives:
- To examine good practices in the implementation of rights-based approaches to environmental protection.
- To provide a high-level platform for engaging the global conversation about comparative environmental rights-based approaches among policy-makers and governments, practitioners, non-governmental organizations, civil society, scholars, educators, and post-graduate students.
